When in Australia, a road trip is a must. It's the best way to experience what this country has to offer. There are many famous routes that you can take, and you won't be disappointed. Below are some recommended road trips.
Also known as the East Coast trip this is undoubtedly the most famous and most popular road trip in Australia, so be warned, you won't be alone. Australian winter time would be the best time to do this as it's starting to get chillier in Sydney and it's the dry season in Northern Queensland.
Sydney - Newcastle - Port Stephens - Port MacQuarie - Coffs Harbour - Byron Bay -
Gold Coast - Brisbane - Sunshine Coast - Hervey Bay - Fraser Island - Agnes Waters & Town of 1770 - Rockhampton - Mackay - Airlie Beach - Whitsundays - Bowen - Townsville - Tully - Cairns
Unless you have a few months and lots of cash at your disposal, you probably won't make all these stops, so just pick and choose where you do, you won't be disappointed wherever you go.
The East coast may be the most travelled road, but is it the best? That depends on what you're looking for. This trip couldn't be more different than the East coast. It is isolated and lonely, and terrific. The trip is almost 3000km, roughly the same as Sydney to Cairns, give or take a few hundred km, yet there are no high-rises and tacky souvenir shops, which makes it seem that much longer. (or shorter)
Many people's favorite part of Australia. This would take a minimum of three days, but that would be with limited stops. It is far less populated than the eastern coast but there is plenty to see and do on this trip. May to June would be the ideal time to do this trip.
Follow in the footsteps of the famous explorer John McDouall Stuart after whom the highway was named. This is real outback Australia and highly recommended.
